Danielle’s B4 School Check

The nurse assessing Danielle’s learning development.

Danielle had her B4 School Check and 4 year old immunisations this week. This is a regular check done at the doctors by a special nurse to assess a child’s development and readiness for starting school when they turn 5. What they are looking for in particular are any potential learning difficulties that your child may face on attending school. Danielle passed this part of the check with flying colours.

Parent’s Concerns

Something else that they do at a B4 School Check is discuss with the parent any other issues or potential difficulties that the parent has noticed about their child. They bring a filled in survey that they are sent in the mail and the nurse goes through it with the parent to get a clearer picture. In Danielle’s case, I have a question with certain aspects of her behaviour and emotions that are very different with what I dealt with from Celine and Blake at the same age. The nurse read my comments and listened to my concerns and is referring us to the triage assessment team to see if anything can be diagnosed regarding it.

The last thing they do is give the child their 4 year immunisations. This one contains the usual suspects of HIP & MMR etc that children get at their 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months & 15 months immunisations as well as the Polio vaccination etc. Unlike the baby ones, these injections are done in the upper arms. Danielle was a trooper and took her immunisations with only a little cry. Not the screaming that Blake gave at his one.

If you have a 4 year old in NZ and haven’t taken them for their B4 School Check and immunisations? Then I seriously encourage you to book them in for it now.

Chicken Coop

Eugene has finally started pricing the things he will need to build me my long awaited chicken coop. He found a price this afternoon that he’s happy with and is purchasing the stuff tomorrow. I can hardly wait for them to be built! I’ve only been waiting for 5 years. I am looking forward to having my own hens to collect eggs from each day. There is something tastier about eggs fresh from hens than the ones purchased in the supermarket, free range or not.

Puddles Are Fun

Everybody in! Puddles are fun!

We’ve been having a few storm fronts recently. Part and parcel of the winter months I guess. But they are a little more regular this winter than we’ve experienced in the past since we bought our house. While there are a pile of negatives to having a pile of rain non-stop. Like not being able to get my washing dried. Especially as my brand new dryer is faulty and at the electricians getting fixed. There are also some fun aspects.

Yesterday in a break from the rain, I put Isabella’s gumboots on and walked her down to the flooded part of our drive way to play in the puddles. The older children followed not long after and although they weren’t wearing their own gumboots all four children as well as the two dogs had a ball running in and out of the puddles while splashing at each other. It’s Bella’s first real experience at this so it was fun to watch the joy in her face as she did so.

What was your favourite part of the week?

  1. Hi Patricia,

It is so fun to have a chicken coop! We watched over 35 chickens in Bali a few years ago. The chooks lived in a glam coop designed by the lady whose chicks we were caring for. Fresh eggs and it was a blast to hear them and see them walk around the villa grounds from sun up to sun down.

    Thanks for sharing 🙂
