The Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science & History

On Saturday my family & I took a trip to Palmerston North to check out the Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science & History. Let me just say, it was well worth the trip! Have you been yet?

Our main aim of the trip was to check out the Dinosaur Encounters exhibit that they have on at the moment until February 2017 (I think). But we also had a look around the rest of the museum while we were there since we’d never been before.

Watch out for the T-Rex in the dino exhibit!

First stop was the Dinosaur Encounters exhibit. There was some fun things for kids to look at such as dinosaur poo and footprints before you head into the main exhibit of moving and roaring dinosaurs. Each display was lifelike and actually frightened Blake and Dani a little until we explained they were robots and not real. Then they relaxed and enjoyed it.

After that, we headed down the the Under 8 section which was full of lots of interactive play for the kids. It included a colouring area, a reading area, a construction area, a plumbing area and so much more. It was so entrancing for the kids we had trouble getting them out again to check out the rest of the museum!

The rest of the museum included exhibits on history, art and science. Most of the exhibits included an activity for the kids to learn with. Such as the weather cycle exhibit where the kids had to throw little blue balls up into a “cloud” and then pull a chain to release the balls in the act of  “making it rain.” Each exhibit was small but informative without being overwhelmingly so, and very definitely aimed with children in mind.

So if you’re planning a trip to the lower North Island of New Zealand, the Te Manawa Museum is most certainly worth a visit!
