Sleeping Like A Baby

I always laugh when someone tells me they slept so well they “slept like a baby.” My next thought is always, have you have seen a baby sleep?

I know there are babies that sleep and sleep well. So well that they sleep through the night. But I’ve never had one. My babies have all woken up between two to three times a night. Sometimes more, if they are teething or sick. Sometimes less, if they healthy and well.

There have been nights during a growth spurt, when my babies have woken every hour on the hour to cluster feed. There have been nights when my babies have decided that the middle of the night is play time. There have been nights when the only time my babies will sleep is when they can feel my heart beat against their cheek.

It’s doesn’t stop when they grow up either.

Celine was 2.5 years old before she slept through the night for the first time and nearly 5 before she did it on a consistent basis. Blake and Danielle will still wake up in the middle of the night on the odd occasion. I have no expectations of Isabella sleeping through the night any time soon in the next year or two.

So the next time you have a great sleep, think twice before you say you “slept like a baby” because, honestly?

Babies don’t sleep!
