When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher. As a young teenager I wanted to be a writer or a policewoman. Then there was the time I wanted to join the Navy or be a lawyer. It seems weird to be looking back at all the things I wanted to be when I grow up.
Ironically, none of the things I wanted to be as a child actually came out that way. Life got in the way. I didn’t go to university because my grades weren’t anywhere near good enough. By the time I graduated high school, I had already been distracted by boys. Or rather one boy in particular. So instead of going to university, I went to work.
My first job straight out of school was working for my father as a yard worker. From there I was was hired out to a temporary branch company as an office junior where I then became permanent for 9 months. I played around for a month trying to sell Kirby Vacuums ands discovered I wasn’t much of a salesperson. Finally I found a receptionist role that stayed in for 2 years.
After that I went from full time receptionist to part time international assistant at the same company while I studied for a Diploma in Business Administration at Manukau Institute of Technology. It was around this time that I met my now Husband. Once I graduated with my Diploma I became full time again as the international assistant. Then I got pregnant with Celine.
After that I stayed at home with Celine for a while and then found a job as an office administrator when she was 15 months old. I was full time there for 6 months before recession caused me to lose my job. That was the last job I held until the beginning of this year when I began as a bar staff / cleaner for a few months.
Out of all the things that I wanted to be as a child, the only one that really panned out was as a writer. Although as a child, I was thinking more along the lines of books. Instead, I’m a blog writer and have been since 2011. Blogs weren’t exactly a thing when I was a child.
I can’t really say that I’m upset about how my life turned out, although I can’t really say that my life turned out how I planned it either.
Did your life turn out the way you planned it? Or did life get in the way?
