How do people react to seeing my daughter on crutches?

This is a question we get asked a lot from my daily vlog viewers and it’s an interesting one. Usually this comes from receiving negative reactions themselves with their child which always makes me curious as to what kind of society they are living in where differences aren’t easily accepted.
From our own experience we generally only get positive reactions. Most of the people where I live will come up and ask what Celine has done to her foot that she needs crutches and they are usually very friendly when they do. They do look surprised when I respond that it’s not her foot that is hurt but her hip from Perthes Disease and then curious because it’s not a condition most people have heard of. Occasionally we get someone who actually knows what Perthes Disease is. Normally they don’t.
We are getting asked more and more often nowadays what is wrong. When she first had to use crutches it wasn’t an unusual thing for children to have broken legs and need crutches and I think most people just assumed that was the case until they realized she didn’t wear a cast. Now that Celine has been using them for 8 months they are even more curious simply because while 2 months would be a normal length of time to be on crutches, 10 months isn’t.
However, when it comes to her peers, Celine says that it’s not always a pleasant experience. Sometimes other children aren’t very nice about her crutches even when they know why she needs to use them. But I guess that’s children for you. Her teachers usually sort out any teasing that occurs at school.
